  • Civil War

Fort Taylor was under Union control before and during the Civil War, serving as a Gulf Coast headquarters for the Navy, and preventing shipments from arriving at nearby Confederate ports with cannons that could fire as far as 3 miles. This stymieing role, though never directly engaged in combat, is believed to have helped bring the war to an end.

    Snorkeling

The waters around Fort Taylor are teeming with tropical marine life, such as parrotfish, colorful coral, and yellowtail snapper, making it an ideal place for an afternoon of snorkeling.
